14/Dec/2008 0910hrs Atlantic 75 Lifeboat

Swansea CG requested the launch of ILB following a report from the guard room at Zeta Berth, of a small power boat drifting in the river Torridge and considered a danger to shipping. The ILB arrived on scene and towed the vessel to Skern where it was secured to a crew members moorings. The vessel's moorings had came free from the river bed. The ILB then returned to station and was made ready for service.

07/Dec/2008 1435hrs Atlantic 75 Lifeboat

Under tow.Swansea CG requested the launch of ILB to assist a broken down boat near to the Yelland Power Station Jetty. The vessel had 2 persons on board and was at anchor with engine failure. The ILB arrived on scene and took the vessel in tow to its moorings at Limers Lane, Bideford before returning to station.

27/Nov/2008 1508hrs Tyne-class Lifeeboat

Swansea CG received a radio call from the Tug Cannis on Wednesday evening for conditions and weather at Bideford Bar, Approaching tug CANNISdue to the state of tide it was recommended he did not attempt to cross the Bar and take shelter at Clovelly for the night, which the skipper did. The skipper then made another attempt to cross the Bar on 27/11/2008, when the tug arrived at the Bar the weather had worsened, with increased wind, and decreased visability. The skipper was concerned that he could not see the leading lights, nor the Bar Bouy, the skipper asked for the assisitance of Appledore Lifeboat. All -Weather Lifeboat George Gibson launched, once on scene the ALB guided the Tug into the river, giving him directions via VHF Radio, once safely inside the river she was tied up on Appledore Quay and the ALB returned to station.

15/Nov/2008 1609hrs Boarding Boat BB-060

Boarding boat launched due to lack of water to assist a kite surfer which had been observed in trouble by a local angling vessel. The skipper had seen the kite surfer being blown towards him, so he upped anchor and headed towards him, the person was retrieved from the water and the lifeboat called for. When the ILB arrived on scene the casualty was safe and well with no medical attention required, the casualty was then transferred to the ILB and borought back to the station.

15/Nov/2008 1305hrs Atlantic 75 Lifeboat

Swansea CG requested the launcgh of ILB to assist a surfer being swept out to sea approx 60 yards off Croyde beach. 5 Minutes after launching it was reported that the casualty had been brought ashore safe and well by others, the ILB was then stood down and returned to station.

14/Nov/2008 2145hrs Boarding Boat BB-060

Devon and Cornwall Police reoprted to Swansea CG of an 18ft Motor Cruiser adrift off Chivenor. Boarding boat was launched as that part of the river is very shallow, crew searched the area and found nothing amiss, after a full and extensive search the boarding boat was stood down and returned to station.

23/Oct/2008 0008hrs Atlantic 75 Lifeboat

Appledore's ILB was stood down whilst in the process of launching to assist a person believed to be jumping from Bideford bridge, person found safe and well.

12/Oct/2008 1535hrs Atlantic 75 Lifeboat

While at the station the Coxswain was told by the wife of a crewmember that her husband had been knocked out of his boat by the reserve moorings and that his boat was drifting. The cox paged the ILB immediately, person in the water was wearing a lifejacket and was alongside a large yacht. Once enough crew were at statio the Lifeboat was launched and proceeded to the Pool. Casualty had managed to get himself out of the water and onto the large yacht where he was then transferred to his own boat. ILB came alongside and once it was established all was well the ILB returned to station.

Appledore ILB was launched after Coastguards received a 999 call from the owner of a speedboat to say they had hit a sandbank off Penhill Point and required assistance, with 2 adults and 2 children onboard. When ILB arrived on scene it was noted that the boat was well aground and nothing could be done, a crewmember put an anchor out so the boat would not drift on the next tide, the 4 persons were brought onboard the ILB and brough back to station.

05/Oct/2008 1348hrs Atlantic 75 Lifeboat

The ILB was launched to assist a 9m yacht which had slipped its moorings at Instow, The ILB arrived on scene and found the yacht on the beach, the anchor was deployed to secure the yacht and the owner informed by the boathouse. The ILB then stood down and returned to station.

02/Oct/2008 2000hrs Atlantic 75 Lifeboat

Swansea CG requested the launch of ILB to a 60 year old male in his boat near to the Gaiety slipway at Appledore. He had gone out in his boat to bale out his speedboat, due to the adverse weather the casualties son was becoming concerned as his father was bailing out the water was coming in just as fast. The ILB took the gentleman off his boat and landed him at Churchfields Slipway to Westward Ho! CRT. ILB then returned to station.

28/Sep/2008 0746hrs Tyne-class LifeeboatBoarding Boat BB-060

Appledore's ALB was launched to assist the Yacht ‘Owens Boy’ which had gone aground at Airey Point, when the Lifeboat arrived on scene the casualty was well aground. The Boarding Boat was also launched as it was needed to get the casualty as insufficient water for the ALB. The owner of the yacht placed his poles out to act as legs to stop her falling over. Once the owner was happy nothing more could be done both boats were returned to station. The owner stayed onboard the yacht to wait for the next tide.

Appledore ALB was launched to assist an 8.5m yacht, (pictured right), becalmed and with engine failure 1.5nm off the Fairway Buoy. Once on scene the Lifeboat towed the vessel to its moorings at Instow.

27/Sep/2008 1350hrs Atlantic 75 Lifeboat

Appledore's ILB was launched after Swansea CG received a 999 call reporting 2 people and 2 dogs cut off by the tide on Zulu bank. Lifeguards also attended the casualties until the ILB arrived, casualties were brought ashore at the Lifeboat Station.

23/Sep/2008 1335hrs Atlantic 75 Lifeboat

WDoDo Launch hilst walking to station the LOM observed a boat with possible problems drifting down the estuary, the CG was informed and a self launch initiated. The vessel was drifting with the ebb tide and a strong easterly wind, the casualties were seen to be paddling with no avail, the ILB launched and was alongside in 1min, and towed the casualty to her moorings at Instow.

Swansea Coastguard requested the launch of ALB to assist a 26ft yacht with rigging failure and running low on fuel some 3 miles off Hartland Quay. As the ALB arrived on scene the casualty ran out of fuel. A crewmember was placed onboard the casualty with a VHF radio as the vessels own radio was not working, a tow line was attached and the vessel towed to Appledore.

The ILB was requested to launch to a report of 2 body boarders paddling out around Baggy Point from Croyde Beach but were caught in a rip tide. When units arrived on scene a report came in that the persons had made it out of the rip and were coming ashore at Puttsborough, once this was confirmed and all was well all units were stood down.

Swansea CG received a report that a 30ft angling boat with engine problems had broken down 0.5nm from Fairway Buoy, ILB was launched and took the vessel in tow as close to her moorings as the tide would allow. The ILB then returned to station.

Appledore ILB was launched to a vessel off Appledore Quay who had suffered engine failure, once on scene the vessel was towed to Churchfields Slipway to awaiting Coastguards, the ILB then returned to station.

04/Sep/2008 2342hrs Boarding Boat BB-060

Boarding Boat was launched due to state of tide following a request from the Police to attend the Taw Bridge at Barnstaple where a male was threatening to jump. Once on scene the boarding boat was requested to stand off as the person was in a state of distress. After some 30 mins the male was taken into police custody and all units stood down.

22/Aug/2008 2001hrs Atlantic 75 Lifeboat

Appledore's ILB was launched to a 31ft yacht which had broke free of its moorings at Instow. Once scene the yacht (owned by one of our DLAs!!) was taken in tow. The owner had been notified and was brought to the casualty which was by now under tow, stemming the tide. Once onboard the boat was towed to Appledore Quay where it was secured alongside. The ILB then returned to station.

Swansea CG requested the launch of ILB to assist a yacht which had broke free of its moorings, ILB stood down shortly after launching as a RIB in the area had towed the yacht back to her moorings.

18/Aug/2008 2032hrs Atlantic 75 Lifeboat

Appledore's ILB launched to report of yacht adrift which had broke free of its moorings and in danger of grounding on rocks with 2 pob. As ILB arrived on scene the yacht was aground on sand at Instow beach. Crew member waded ashore to check all was well. Once this was established the ILB informed Swansea CG and returned to station.

Our ILB launched following a 999 call from a 12ft fishing boat, which had suffered engine failure 0.5nm from boathouse. Once on scene the ILB took the vessel in tow to Instow then returned to station.

Our ALB and ILB launched to casualty close to Bideford Bar. The ILB found casualty near to Fairway Buoy with 3 POB suffering from sea sickness and cold. 3 persons transferred to ALB to be warmed whilst ILB went back to casualty to drop anchor. 3 persons onboard ALB were becoming more ill and required transferring to shore as soon as possible, with helicopter in Wales decision was taken to transfer casualties ashore using ILB whilst ALB stayed with vessel.

Due to state of tide the ALB steamed around in bay for 2 hours awaiting the flood tide. The Bar was cleared at 1530hrs and casualty vessel left on moorings near boathouse.

Our Boarding Boat was requested to launch to attend a small dinghy in difficulties near Barnstaple New Bridge. Whilst preparing to launch the crew were stood down as the casualty had made it to shore unaided.

08/Aug/2008 2052hrs Atlantic 75 Lifeboat

Swansea CG requested launch of ILB to a drifting yacht who’s skipper had swam ashore. ILB launched and recovered yacht from Westward Ho! beach and towed it to Appledore Quay. Skipper had been picked up by Coastguards and brought to boathouse where he was showered and offered dry clothes by the crew. Skipper was taken to vessel at Appledore Quay by CG team to rejoin his vessel.

Swansea CG requested launch of ALB, ILB and Boarding Boat to search for a possible man overboard from a motorboat off Instow Yacht Club. The casualty was found by another yacht with its engine running on its moorings with no-one onboard. All 3 boats searched the area and along the riverbank. Boarding boat crew found the missing person on another yacht, as he had went with them for a sail around the estuary and left his own engine running in order to charge the batteries.

Swansea CG requested launch of ILB to a broken down speedboat off Instow Yacht Club. The crew onboard the vessel had managed to grab a yacht at its moorings until the ILB came alongside. ILB then towed the vessel back to its moorings at Instow before returning to station.

Appledore ALB was requested to launch to motor yacht "Priorty 1" with Engine Failure and lack of wind,some 1.5 miles off Bideford Fairway Buoy. Once the lifeboat arrived on scene and all sails were lowered,the Tow Rope was passed and the vessel was towed back into Appledore and placed on a RNLI Mooring.

Appledore ILB was requested to launch to the Aid of two Kayaks unable to make land due to strong tides. When the ILB Arrived on Scene both Kayaks had managed to make shore,once the ILB crew made sure all was well and details taken the Lifeboat returned to Station.

25/Jul/2008 1920hrs Tyne-class Lifeeboat

Launched at 1920hrsd to the fishing vessel "PACEMAKER", with a fouled propeller 26nm North of Bideford Bar. Tenby Lifeboat was also launched as the fishing vessel was also some 15 miles from Tenby, The fishing vessel came from Bideford, so the Tenby boat Towed the pacemaker towards Appledore. Both lifeboats met up at 2100 and the tow passed over to Appledore, who commenced the long tow home,arriving back at Appledore Station at 0200 the following morning.

Appledore ALB was requested to launch following a 999 call from a yacht unsure of its position, shortly after launching a rescue helicopter located the casualty 2 miles below Hartland Point. The ALB was recalled and Clovelly Lifeboat launched to assist.

Appledore ILB was launched to assist a 5m open power boat which had suffered engine failure in the river Torridge and drifting towards rocks. As the ILB arrived on scene, the casualty, with 3 POB managed to restart their engine and were escorted back to their moorings at Appledore.

Appledore ALB, ILB and Boarding Boat were requested to launch to assist in the search for a missing 61 year old male in a vulnerable state, missing from Appledore. The river was searched from the mouth, up to the Iron Bridge, the Boarding boat searching in boats where ILB and ALB could not reach, and also up past Bideford Long Bridge. The ILB searched from Appledore to Bideford along with the ALB. With the search completed and nothing found, all boats were stood down and returned to station at 2045hrs

Swansea CG requested the launch of Appledore All-Weather Lifeboat to assist the Kathleen & May, a three masted, 30 metre, sail schooner, which had attempted to secure a mooring near the lifeboat station. Her rudder had become fouled on the mooring line. Due to strong tide and lack of draught she was unable to free herself. The boarding boat was also used and the ALB stood by in attendance as a diver was lowered into the water to free the vessel. This was successful and the Kathleen & May successfully moored on the reserve RNLI mooring and sailed at approx 9am the following day.

Appledore ILB was requested to launch to assist a small boat with 2 persons onboard in difficulty near to the lifeboat station. Lifeboat launched and towed the casualty to Churchfields carpark.

Down at the head.

Appledore Lifeboat and Appledore ILB were launched to assist 5m powerboat which had taken on water due to adverse weather conditions. The ALB salvage pump was used to pump the excess water from the casualty, Rescue Helicopter 169 was also on scene in case an evacuation was needed.

After pumping out the casualty the boat was escorted back to Appledore where she then made her own way to her moorings at Fremington.

Appledore ILB and Appledore Boarding boat were launched to recover a tender, seen drifting in between Bideford Long Bridge and Bideford Old Bridge, tender was recovered and a search of the area completed incase anyone had fallen overboard from vessel. With nothing found both boats were stood down and returned to station.

All-weather Lifeboat launched to assist angling vessel 'Stolen Hours' which had suffered mechanical failure 0.5nm South of Bideford Bar. Lifeboat arrived on scene and took the vessel in tow to Appledore.

Appledore ALB was requested to launch to assist an 11.5m yacht 'Sea Sense' who had suffered engine failure in Bideford Bay. The lifeboat arrived on scene and towed the yacht back to Appledore where she was able to get her engine re-started and make way under her own power to her moorings at Instow.

31/May/2008 1320hrs Tyne-class Lifeeboat

Appledore All-weather Lifeboat was launched in dense fog to attend a diving casualty who was suffering from decompression sickness near to Lundy Island. Rescue Helicopter 169 was also tasked. The helicopter arrived on scene first and winched the casualty and his dive buddy, taking them to Plymouth to the decompression chamber, the ALB was then stood down and returned to station.

27/May/2008 2210hrs Atlantic 75 LifeboatBoarding Boat BB-060

Appledore ILB and Boarding Boat were requested to launch to assist a female who had jumped from Barnstaple Old Bridge. Paramedics were treating the woman on scene and required assistance to move her from the mud and safely to shore. The ILB was first on scene and took the woman in a stretcher, along with paramedics and transferred casualty and paramedics to the ambulance.

Appledore Inshore Lifeboat launched to evacuate 1 person from a fishing veseel in Bideford Bay who had severed a finger. Person brought ashore by the ILB then passed to paramedics and transferred to hospital.

Appledore All-weather Lifeboat was requested to launch to assist a 27m ex Dutch barge which had Arrival on scene by Appledore lifeboat.suffered engine failure in Bideford bay, when the ALB arrived on scene the vessel was at anchor, the anchor was raised and the casualty taken in tow to Appledore. The vessel had suffered mechanical failure after the fuel filters became blocked and no spares were onboard.

Appledore boarding boat was requested to launch to a report of 2 persons in the water near to Churchfields car park. When the Lifeboat arrived on scene they found 2 persons had attempted to swim from Instow to Appledore, however opne of the casualties was not a strong swimmer but had managed to climb onboard a motor cruiser. The lifeboat retrieved the 2 youths and landed them at Instow beach to awaiting Coastguards.

Appledore boarding boat launched to assist 2 youths who were stuck on a sand bank near to Bideford, they had climbed into a punt which had later sunk and then climbed onto a boat until help arrived.

Swansea CG requested the launch of Appledore Boarding Boat to assist a small angling boat who had become entangled and ran over its tender. When the Lifeboat arrived on scene the crew released the tender and the boat was anchored in the river until enough tide allowed the boat to return to her moorings after a quick check to make sure the propulsion systems were working fine.

Appledore RNLI's boarding boat was requested to launch to a sailing yacht which had broke free of its moorings and was near to Appledore Shipyard, the boarding boat arrived on scene, attached a tow, and towed it to moorings at Instow, where it was secured.

19/Apr/2008 1828hrs Atlantic 75 Lifeboat

Appledore RNLI's Atlantic 75 Inshore Lifeboat was requested to launch to assist a 6m motor vessel that had suffered mechanical failure in the river near to Appledore Shipyard,. The ILB arrived on scene and towed the vesssel to Churchfields car park. The Lifeboat was then diverted to another casualty who had also suffered mechanical failure and was at anchor in the river. The casualty was towed back to her moorings at Bideford, before the ILB returned to station.

Appledore ILB was requested to launch after a report of a yacht adrift in the river. When the ILB arrived on scene it was established that the yacht was infact at anchor and not drifting. A false call with good intent.

04-Apr-2008 0500hrs Tyne-class Lifeeboat

Appledore Casualty alongside.All-weather Lifeboat was launched to attend to a crewmember of the m.v. Lady of Rudding who had suffered broken ribs after a collision at sea with another vessel. The motor yacht and a small tug are thought to have collided with each other about 15 miles (24km) off Tintagel in thick fog. The conditions were considered by the Coastguard to be too dangerous to use a rescue helicopter.

The injured crewmember was taken onboard the lifeboat and treated by the Lifeboat Doctor (LMA), then passed to paramedics on shore. The vessel was sea-worthy enough to continue in to Appledore where she was moored with help of Lifeboat crewmembers.

The Inshore lifeboat was requested to launch to a report of a surfer in difficulties off Croyde beach. The surfers board had snapped in half and he was no longer visible according to the first informant. As the ILB was preparing to launch the surfer managed to swim ashore and the ILb was stood down once the surfer was identified as being the person in trouble.

Appledore Rescue of the PACEMAKERALB was launched again to the mfv Pacemaker who had reported that they were in danger of breaking up alonside the jetty due to the sea state. Appledore lifeboat arrived on scene and towed the casualty back to Bideford quay. The Lifeboat was re-fuelled and ready for service at 0945hrs

Appledore ALB launched to assist mfv Pacemaker who had a rope around its propellor close to Lundy Island, shortly after launching the Lifeboat was stood down as the casualty had managed to moor on a jetty.

Both Appledore's Inshore Lifeboat and its Boarding boat launched in response to a red flare sighted by various members of the public including a crew member. Both boats used white parachute flares to illuminate the area and search the river from the shipyard to the Lifeboat station without success. A shore search was also carried out by lifeboat crew and coastguards with nothing found. All units were then stood down at 2220hrs with nothing found.

Appledore RNLI boarding boat launched to a report of a person in the water near to Appledore shipyard, calling for help. A person was recovered from water suffering from the effects of cold, and shock. This survivor and handed over to paramedics who took him to hospital.

It was later found that the person had been playing in an old boat on the shoreline and the ebbing tide had caught the boat and took him into the middle of the estuary, it then came to rest on a sandbank in the middle of the river. He attempted to swim to try and reach the shore. The message is WAIT FOR HELP.

Both of Appledore lifeboats were launched to a report of a possible surf ski at Puttsborough beach. Whilst lifeboats were en-route RAF Helo 169 identified the possible surf ski as abandoned fishing gear. Both boats then returned to station.

The boarding boat at Appledore Lifeboat Station was launched to a report of a missing female in the vicinity of Barnstaple Old Bridge. However, the lifeboat was stood down after the missing person was found safe and well.

Appledore lifeboat was requested to launch by Swansea Coastguard following a report of a possible
body in the water near Castle Quay, Barnstaple. An off duty paramedic had called and said he was following it along the river bank. When the Boarding Boat arrived on scene the body was found to be 2 large bags of waste. The boarding boat collected the bags and returned to station. A false call with good intent.
